THAT IS WHY THE HIGH COAST IS THE HIGHEST IN SWEDEN
During the last ice age, the ice was at its thickest, about three kilometers, here on the coast of Ångermanland. The earth’s crust was pushed down, at most 800 meters, and when the ice retreated about 20,000 years ago, the land began to rise again. Nowhere in the world has the total land elevation been as great as in the High Coast area. Since the ice melted, the country has been raised about 286 meters in relation to sea level. At the top of the mountains, you can still see the traces of the sea waves that washed over rocks and boulders. Höga Kusten became a world heritage site in 2000.
