Let the body work on well-groomed ski tracks, or take a ride on the snowshoes in a sparkling winter-covered forest. Or just enjoy spa treatments and good food
in a quiet and harmonious environment. The High Coast is a bit calmer, a little less activity-packed during autumn and winter – but just as beautiful.
Hike in the fall
Autumn is an ideal hiking time with a slightly cooler climate and fantastic colors in nature. If you enjoy going for yourself in the woods then we can warmly recommend the fall when the tourist pressure has also fallen considerably on the most popular joints in Nordingrå and the High Coast. Also the area around Sollefteå has many beautiful hiking trails in forest terrain which is a wonderful experience during the autumn. Keep in mind that service in the form of housing and trade is not really on the same level as in high season.
With snowshoes and rods, you will arrive in principle wherever you want even in winter, even outside marked trails. The snow dampens all sounds and crossing an unbroken snow surface on a sunny winter day and only hearing its own breathing is pure quality of life.
Both the Skuleskogen National Park and Skuleberget are wonderful destinations in the winter, as well as, for example, at Vårdkasberget or Fälleberget in Härnösand.
Cross country skis
Cross-country skiing is both fantastic training and a wonderful nature experience. In the High Coast there are many groomed ski trails, many illuminated lights. The season start is very dependent on the temperature, but several plants add artificial snow to be able to open as early as possible and a rule of thumb is that there are usually cross-country tracks from the beginning of December. In the Skyttis area in Örnsköldsvik and the track area on Södra berget in Sundsvall you pay a (small) fee to go, but in return two really nice facilities with many and long tracks. In the vast majority of tracks you pay no fee at all to go.
Few outdoor activities give such a feeling of freedom as speeding over a naturis on long-distance skates. Finding good and safe ice as a tourist can be difficult, but every year an ice rink is plowed up on the Bäckfjärden in Örnsköldsvik when the ice has settled. The track is about three kilometers long. As usual, safety A and O when it comes to long-distance skating: thus both safety equipment and company!
An Alpine Vacation in the High Coast? Yes, it goes really well! The facilities in the area do not compete with long and many slopes but with accessibility: in places such as Sundsvall, Härnösand, Sollefteå and Örnsköldsvik, the closest alpine resort is max ten minutes from the center! If you want top accommodation with ski in / ski out location then Södra Berget in Sundsvall and Hallstaberget in Sollefteå are super options with top fresh destination hotels at the top of the hill. The season starts in December or January depending on the weather conditions. The facilities in the inland are smaller but usually more snow-safe. Solberg usually has an early premiere, as well as Junsele and Ramsele.
Major competitions and events will continue to be arranged even after the big tourist season is over. Sweden’s largest open-air festival, Utefest, takes the Friluftsbyn in Docksta on 13-15 September and offers adventures, courses and lectures. The fast-growing competition Härnö Trail runs this October 5 and is expected to attract about 1,000 participants to the tough tracks at Vårdkasberget in Härnösand. And on February 22, 2020, the winter’s great challenge awaits, the High Coast Winter Trail in Skule, a trail race in snow and with crazy views of the World Heritage Site.
On the shallows of Smitingen’s sea bath in Härnösand, the autumn winds push up heavy waves, which makes the beach attractive for surfers from Stockholm and north. Many coastal stretches in the Nordingrå-area and on Alnön, for example, can offer nice waves at favorable winds.
Skiing can be a great way to get out in the outdoors in the winter. The trails are, however, unevenly distributed with well-developed systems, for example around Sollefteå, Ljustorp-Liden and north and west of Örnsköldsvik while the Nordingrå-area almost completely lacks snowmobile trails. If you want to rent a scooter then try Övik Marina & Motor AB in Örnsköldsvik, Solbergsbacken in Solberg.
Traveling with a dog sled through a magnificent winter landscape is a truly odd and exclusive experience. At Farm Backsjö north of Sollefteå you will even get the ride yourself. Tensile willing siberian huskies take you on an unforgettable adventure.
Pick berries and mushrooms
Fully concentrated, yet free to let your thoughts wander – it is a day in the berry and mushroom forest there. At best, you come home tired in the body and fully loaded with both nature experiences and the forest’s riches. The lingon season extends into September and the whole autumn until the first frost is fungal time. Rent a cottage or take in bed & breakfast outside the larger towns and you are close to the forest pantry!
Autumn and winter is a good time to unwind and take care of yourself. Take the opportunity to enjoy swimming, spa treatments, exercise and really good food when the pressure on hotels and tourist facilities goes down! Hotel Södra Berget in Sundsvall and Hotel Hallstaberget in Sollefteå is a destination hotel with good restaurant and spa facilities, and also arranges shows, tests and theme nights with frequent intervals. The paradise in Örnsköldsvik is an experience bath with a new spa which also has a bistro with fresh snacks.
